The Beall Collet Chuck & Collet System
The standard Beall collet system, adapted from metalworking technology, is designed to hold small parts safely and accurately without marring. The components are a machined steel collet chuck (threaded for a 1"-8, 1 1/4"-8, 1 1/2"- 8 or 33mm lathe spindle), matching spanners/tommy bar and precision-ground collets in five 1/8" increments (1/4", 3/8", 1/2", 5/8" and 3/4"). Individual collets have a range of forty thousandths, or about 1/32". The collets hold so securely that wrenches are usually unnecessary, with hand tightening being sufficient for most applications. In addition to holding wood stock for turning, the system is useful for mounting assorted mandrels, small shop-made face plates, metal turning blanks and small jam chucks. The big collet chuck set is supplied with 7/8", 1", 1 1/8" and 1 1/4" collets.
Beall IX (Internal Expanding) Collets
Beall IX (internal expanding) collets are new products just for woodturners that can be used instead of jam chucks to mount turnings on a lathe. Insert one in a hole bored in your work, and the jaws will expand inside to clamp it securely. They are made from hard anodized aluminum and adjustable from the back with a hex key (included). IX collets have a 1/2" mounting shaft, which enables them to be used with a standard drill chuck, but they are also great accessories for the Beall collet chuck. Sizes fit inside hole diameters from 1/2" to 1 1/2" and come 1/8" increments. You may choose to purchase them individually, but the full set comes with a handsome cherry mounting block that will make you the envy of all the turners on your block.
Beall Spindle Taps
Using a spindle tap allows you to mount wooden objects directly onto your lathe spindle. Just drill a hole 1/8" under the diameter of your spindle, tap it and mount it directly on your lathe. The tapped block can then be put to use in a special face plate, jam chuck, vacuum fixture or other mounting assembly.
