Veritas Tapered Tenon Cutters

The Veritas Tapered Tenon Cutters are available in 3/8", 7/16", 1/2", 9/16", and 5/8" sizes, as well as a starter set of the three most common sizes (3/8", 1/2", and 5/8"). Each size cuts from its nominal diameter up to 1/2" larger over a 2 1/2" total tenon length.

Use them like a hand-held pencil sharpener: press the workpiece into the cutter body and rotate, or hold the workpiece and rotate the cutter. The straight blade tapers the end of the stock to produce a tapered tenon.

The tapered tenon cutters use a straight-edged blade that tapers the end of the workpiece. The dowel cutters use a curved blade that produces a cylindrical tenon with a radiused shoulder. The bodies are compatible — a straight replacement blade converts a dowel cutter body to cut tapered tenons.

A starter kit of the 3/8", 1/2", and 5/8" sizes covers most tenoning requirements for typical chairmaking. Having all five sizes allows you to cut any diameter tenon up to 1 1/8" in a single operation.
