These knobs are made using domestic torrefied maple – wood treated with a heating process that changes the structure of the wood at the cellular level, stabilizing it against the swelling and shrinkage caused by humidity changes
The wide knob has a relatively flat profile, standing 2" tall overall with a 2" diameter; this provides a large bearing surface for your palm, which improves comfort if you need to press down on the toe of the plane
The flat profile also gives your fingers more purchase when lifting the plane at the end of a stroke, helpful for long or heavy planes
The standard Veritas knob, the same found on most of our bench planes, has a more spherical shape, standing 2 3/8" tall with a maximum diameter of 1 3/4"
The standard knob provides a balance of features between the other two knobs, useful if you alter your grip depending on what kind of work you’re doing
The tall knob has the highest profile of the three, standing 2 5/8" tall, making it a good choice if you prefer to grip with your whole hand
With the smallest maximum diameter of the knobs (1 5/8"), the tall knob is the easiest to grip for users with small hands; the high waist also gives more clearance when pushing with the crook of your thumb
These knobs are the same as those used in our custom bench planes
