It is the tool of choice for major stock removal, the first step in flattening rough stock by hand before moving on to a smooth plane.
Rather than working parallel to the grain, a scrub plane is typically used at an angle of 30° or more to the grain.
It is a single-iron tool by design, which keeps the mechanism simple and suited to the aggressive cuts a scrub plane is meant to make.
The blade comes in high-carbon steel (Rc58-60) or PM-V11 (Rc61-63).
