No. Grits finer than 280x imbed in the stone and contaminate it. The finer grits are for flattening soft metals, blades and soles, as well as conditioning plane soles and blades.
A purpose-made grooved gray iron lap is best, then a milled gray iron casting, plate glass, a mild steel plate or close-grained hardwood.
Lap water stones on plate glass with water only, since oil ruins them. Ferrous and hardwood laps take oil.
