Veritas Honing Compound

The compound is a blend of chromium oxide and aluminum oxide. Chromium oxide provides fine finishing while aluminum oxide contributes cutting speed, and the combination is formulated to cut quickly while still leaving a mirror finish with a light wax film.

The average scratch pattern is 0.5 microns (0.00002"). That is fine enough to bring most edge tool bevels to a mirror finish ready for use, without the need for a finer secondary step on most tools.

Yes, the bonding formula was developed to adhere equally to felt, leather and wood. It charges a leather hand strop just as readily as a felt wheel or leather belt on a polishing motor – apply by rubbing the compound bar against the strop surface.

It is well suited to carving tools and firmer gouges, and can also be used for the final honing step on chisels, plane blades, knives and most other edge tools. It works on both carbon steel and high-speed steel.
